Southbridge sits in southern Worcester County, Massachusetts, in a valley shaped by the Quinebaug River. Like many New England mill towns, it grew along the water, which once powered its factories. On a map the river curves through the centre, and the main streets follow it before climbing the slopes on either side.
The town is best known for the optical industry. For much of the twentieth century, American Optical made Southbridge a major centre for producing lenses and eyewear, and its large complex of buildings still shapes the town.
