Southgate is a suburb in the Downriver area south of Detroit, in Wayne County, Michigan. From above it is almost entirely regular: residential streets form small rectangular blocks, and long, straight arterial roads divide the city into large, even sections.
Most of the housing was built after the Second World War, when the area grew rapidly with families working in the region's industries. The Detroit River and the city of Wyandotte lie a short distance east, while other suburbs extend in every direction, so Southgate's borders are defined by roads rather than by nature.
