Stalybridge lies on the eastern edge of Greater Manchester, where the city's suburbs meet the Pennine hills. The town grew in the valley of the River Tame during the Industrial Revolution, when cotton mills lined the river and workers' terraces climbed the slopes above. That history is still visible from above: a dense centre on the valley floor and rows of streets rising up the hillsides.
The Huddersfield Narrow Canal, built across the Pennines, runs through the heart of town beside the river. In the twentieth century it was largely filled in through the town centre, and it reopened when its restoration was completed in 2001. On the map the canal and the river appear as parallel lines, with streets and small bridges crossing both.
The town is also known for a song: It's a Long Way to Tipperary was first performed in Stalybridge in 1912. A Stalybridge map poster brings together the river, the canal, the railway line and the terraced streets that climb toward open moorland at the edges of the frame.
The Tame winds along the valley floor through the centre. The mill town grew up along this natural line and arranged its streets around it.
Restored and reopened in 2001, the canal runs through the town centre close to the river. It adds a second waterway and a set of small bridges to the map.
Rows of workers' terraces climb the valley sides in parallel lines that follow the slope and give way to open Pennine moorland beyond.

Ko e ha Stalybridge
Stalybridge draws people with family roots in the mills, canal walkers, and those who settled on the edge of Manchester to be near the hills. Its valley shape, with river and canal side by side, gives the map real character on the wall.
