Ko e mape
Sterlitamak lies in Bashkortostan, on the Belaya River, at the point where the Sterlya River flows into it. On a map, the city spreads along the left bank of the Belaya, with its wide meanders and floodplain framing the eastern side. Broad avenues divide the city into large residential blocks, with industrial zones on its edges.
The city grew into one of the region's main industrial centres, especially for the chemical industry, whose large plants still shape its outskirts. Nearby stand the shikhans, isolated limestone hills formed from ancient reefs. One of them, Shakhtau, has been almost entirely quarried for raw material, while others, such as Toratau, are protected natural monuments.
A Sterlitamak map poster captures the contrast between the river and the planned city. The Belaya curves in loops and oxbows across the floodplain, and the city's long avenues and large blocks form an orderly pattern beside it. Industrial areas add broad, geometric shapes to the outer edges of the composition.
The Belaya River winds in wide loops across its floodplain beside the city, with oxbow lakes and channels adding natural curves to the map.
Long, straight avenues cut the city into large residential blocks, a typical Soviet-era layout that gives the map a strong structure.
Large chemical plants and industrial zones form wide, geometric areas along the outskirts, clearly different from the residential districts.
