Stevens Point sits on the Wisconsin River in the centre of the state and is the seat of Portage County. The river runs along the western side of the city, widened in places by dams and dotted with islands. To the east, the streets form a regular American grid that stretches from the old downtown towards newer residential neighbourhoods.
The city is home to the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point, whose campus stands a short way north of downtown. It is also home to the Stevens Point Brewery, one of the oldest continuously operating breweries in the United States. The historic Main Street district and the nearby square preserve many nineteenth-century commercial buildings from the city's lumber era.
A Stevens Point map poster balances water, grid and green space. The Wisconsin River and its backwaters create broad open shapes, and the street pattern gives the page a steady rhythm. A network of parks and riverside trails runs through it all, including the Green Circle Trail loop around the city. The result is orderly but softened by the river.
The river runs along the city's western edge, with islands and wide stretches of dammed water, giving the poster its largest open shapes and a natural border.
The UW–Stevens Point campus is a distinct area of larger buildings and open lawns north of downtown, standing out within the surrounding residential grid.
A long trail loop links parks, woods and riverbanks around the city, visible on the map as a ring of greenery and paths.
