Ko e mape
Suhl sits on the southern side of the Thuringian Forest, and its shape follows the valleys where streams meet below forested ridges. On the map the town reads as a set of elongated arms rather than a round centre, with streets packed tightly along the valley floors and blank, wooded hillsides rising on either side.
The old town lies where the valleys converge, with its compact streets and market square. Newer housing districts climb onto the terraces above. For centuries Suhl was known for gunsmithing and metalwork, and in the twentieth century it became home to Simson, the maker of mopeds and motorcycles familiar across East Germany.
A Suhl map poster shows how strongly the landscape dictates a town. The dense lines of the centre fade quickly into forest, and the roads leaving town wind up into the hills towards the ridge paths and winter sports areas of the Thuringian Forest.
Suhl's streets fill the narrow valleys where local streams meet, giving the map a branching, linear form with steep forested slopes pressing in from both sides.
The historic centre sits at the meeting point of the valleys, where the street network is at its tightest before spreading out along the valley floors.
Suhl's long tradition of weapon and metal manufacturing, later joined by Simson vehicles, left industrial sites along the valleys that are still visible in the town's layout.

Ko e ha Suhl
Suhl draws people who love walking in the Thuringian Forest, as well as those who grew up here and remember the town from GDR times. A map of those valleys is a calm, recognisable reminder of home or of a favourite trip.
