Sūlūru, often written Sullurpeta, lies in southern Andhra Pradesh near the border with Tamil Nadu. It sits between the Chennai–Kolkata highway and the western shore of Pulicat Lake, one of the largest brackish-water lagoons in India. On a map, the town lies between two strong features: straight transport lines on one side and wide, irregular water on the other.
Sūlūru is best known as the nearest town to Sriharikota, the barrier island in Pulicat Lake that is home to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, India's main launch site.
