Sumoto is the largest town on Awaji Island in Hyōgo Prefecture, set on the island's east coast where it faces Osaka Bay. From above, the old town fills a strip of low ground between the sea and wooded hills, with the Sumoto River reaching the coast through the centre and a curving beach and harbour lining the waterfront.
Behind the town rises Mount Mikuma, crowned by the remains of Sumoto Castle, whose stone walls and reconstructed keep look out across the bay. The streets of the old castle town lie below it, while hot spring hotels line the shore to the south. On clear days the Kansai coast is visible across the water.
