Tam Kỳ lies on the coastal plain of central Vietnam, a short distance inland from the sea. The city's map is shaped by water: the Tam Kỳ River loops through and around the urban area, widening toward the coast where lagoons and sandbars break the land into irregular pieces. The centre itself is laid out in a fairly regular grid of broad streets and long blocks.
For many years Tam Kỳ served as the capital of Quảng Nam Province, and in the 2025 reorganisation of Vietnam's provinces the area became part of Da Nang City. National Route 1 and the North–South railway both cross the city on roughly parallel north–south lines, the two strongest straight strokes on the sheet and the reason the city grew where it did.
Toward the sea lies Tam Thanh, a fishing village known for the murals painted across its houses, and inland the Phú Ninh reservoir spreads into a many-armed lake among low hills. A Tam Kỳ map poster frames the city between these two edges, the coastline on one side and the reservoir country on the other, with the river running between them.
The river curls through the city in broad bends before meeting the coastal lagoons, giving the map a strong, flowing line that contrasts with the straight streets of the centre.
East of the city, sandbars, lagoon channels and beach villages such as Tam Thanh make an intricate border between land and sea, delicate and detailed in fine line work.
The reservoir to the west has a ragged, branching shoreline formed by flooded valleys, one of the most striking natural shapes anywhere in the surrounding area.
