Taunggyi is the capital of Shan State in eastern Myanmar and sits high on the Shan Plateau, at about 1,400 metres. Its name means big mountain, after the long ridge that rises along its eastern side. On a map the town runs in a narrow band north to south, squeezed between the slope and the lower land to the west.
A main road follows the length of the town, with markets and the busiest streets alongside it and smaller lanes climbing uphill. To the south-west, the land drops toward the valley of Inle Lake. Taunggyi is known for its hot-air balloon festival held each year during Tazaungdaing, when handmade balloons are launched over the town.
