Thousand Oaks lies in the Conejo Valley in eastern Ventura County, between Los Angeles and the Pacific coast. The Ventura Freeway crosses the city from east to west, and State Route 23 runs north from it. Together they give the map a clear framework of highways, with the neighbourhoods carefully arranged around them.
Hills break the city into separate pockets. Residential streets curve around ridges and canyons, and large areas of protected open space sit between the neighbourhoods. The Santa Monica Mountains rise along the southern edge, where the street pattern thins out and gives way to trails and undeveloped slopes.
The city is named after the valley oaks scattered across the landscape. It is home to California Lutheran University and to the headquarters of the biotechnology company Amgen.
