Thrissur, in central Kerala, has one of the most distinctive plans in India. At its heart is a low wooded hill crowned by the Vadakkunnathan Temple, surrounded by the open ground of Thekkinkadu Maidan. Around the hill runs Swaraj Round, a circular road about two kilometres long. The main roads leave it like spokes from a wheel.
The layout is usually credited to Sakthan Thampuran, the eighteenth-century ruler of Cochin, who cleared the forest around the temple and organised the town around it. A Thrissur map poster brings this radial design into focus. The ring, the spokes and the green centre look almost diagrammatic on paper.
Thrissur is often called the cultural capital of Kerala. Every year the Maidan fills for Thrissur Pooram, a temple festival known for its parade of caparisoned elephants and its fireworks. To the west of the city, the flat kole wetlands and paddy fields stretch toward the coast.

The Vadakkunnathan Temple and the open grounds of Thekkinkadu Maidan form a green island at the centre of the ring.
Main roads leave the round in every direction toward the surrounding towns and give the map a spoked-wheel structure.

Ko e ha Thrissur
Anyone who has stood in the Pooram crowds, or grown up within reach of the Round, will recognise Thrissur's circle straight away. The design is so geometric that it works almost as an abstract print, and it suits a Kerala home or a family abroad.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, for example with a festival year or a family house. Choose one of five styles: Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Paper and Sand bring out the warmth of the temple centre.
