Tighenif lies in Mascara province in northwestern Algeria, on the fertile Ghriss plain southeast of the city of Mascara. From above, the town appears as a compact, orderly block of streets surrounded by farmland. The flat ground has allowed a regular layout, with straight streets crossing at right angles in the older core.
The town was known during the colonial period as Palikao, and its plan still carries the gridded logic of that era. Later neighbourhoods have spread beyond the original blocks, adding new housing and wider roads. Around it, the plain is divided into fields and orchards, crossed by country roads leading to nearby villages.
