Ko e mape
Ting Kau lies on the western coast of Tsuen Wan district, where the hills of the New Territories drop steeply into the water. On a map it is a thin band of development squeezed between slope and sea. Castle Peak Road and the expressways run along the shore, and residential blocks and villages sit wherever there is flat or terraced ground.
The most prominent feature is Ting Kau Bridge, a cable-stayed bridge opened in 1998 that crosses the water to Tsing Yi. Its straight deck extends from the shoreline across the channel and is one of the clearest lines on any map of the area. Behind the coast, the country park hills rise with almost no streets, so a large part of the map remains open.
A Ting Kau map poster is about contrast. There is a dense coastal strip, a large piece of engineering and a steep, empty hinterland, all within a small area. It is a less familiar view of Hong Kong than the harbour skyline, but it shows clearly how the city fits its infrastructure into very limited space along the water.
The cable-stayed bridge, opened in 1998, crosses to Tsing Yi as part of the route to the airport. Its long deck forms a strong line across the water.
Castle Peak Road and the highways run parallel along the shore. They form layered lines that follow the curve of the coastline.
Steep, green slopes rise immediately behind the coast. On the poster they are mostly empty, which balances the dense ribbon of roads and buildings below.
