Tinja lies in the Bizerte Governorate of northern Tunisia, on the narrow channel that connects Lake Ichkeul with the Lake of Bizerte. From above, the town is defined by water. Streets cluster along the banks of the channel, and the two lakes open out on either side, giving the map a composition few inland towns can match.
Lake Ichkeul and its wetlands form a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage site, known for the migratory birds that winter there. Jebel Ichkeul rises from the plain beside the lake. The Lake of Bizerte, meanwhile, is a large lagoon connected to the Mediterranean. Tinja sits between these two bodies of water, with farmland on the surrounding plain.
