Toliara, also known as Tuléar, lies on the Mozambique Channel in southwestern Madagascar, close to the Tropic of Capricorn. Its map shows a low, flat town facing a shallow bay, with a fairly regular street layout near the centre and looser neighbourhoods toward the edges. Mangroves and mudflats line parts of the shore, blurring the boundary between land and water.
Offshore lies a large barrier reef, often called the Great Reef of Toliara, one of the most extensive coral reef systems in the western Indian Ocean. The coast around the town is home to Vezo fishing communities, known for sailing outrigger canoes. Rivers reach the sea on either side of the town.
