Tortola is the largest of the British Virgin Islands. It is long and narrow, with a steep ridge running almost its full length. From above, the coast is a series of bays and points. The north shore opens into sandy coves between green headlands. The south coast is more sheltered and faces a channel toward the smaller islands of the chain.
Road Town, the territory's capital, lines Road Harbour on the south coast. The street grid is densest here, and marinas and ferry piers break up the shoreline. From the harbour, roads climb the ridge in tight hairpins and drop down to the northern bays. At the eastern end, a short bridge links Tortola to Beef Island and the main airport.
