Palm groves
Cultivated date palm groves surround and interweave with the town. From above, they create irregular shapes between streets and the surrounding desert.

Touggourt lies in the Algerian Sahara, in the Oued Righ, a long depression lined with oases. On a map, the town is a patch of streets surrounded by irregular palm groves, and beyond them the plain and dunes stretch in every direction. The contrast between the dense town, the cultivated groves and the empty desert defines its shape.
The town has long been a trading centre on routes across the northern Sahara, and was once the seat of a local dynasty. In the colonial era, a railway was built to connect it with Biskra to the north. Date palms remain central to the local economy, and the groves around the town are among the most visible features from above.
A Touggourt map poster shows the compact older core, newer neighbourhoods laid out on more regular lines and the palm groves that fill the gaps between built-up areas. The roads leading north and south are long straight lines crossing the open ground. In black and white, the emptiness of the desert becomes part of the design.

The town lies in a long chain of oases following the Oued Righ depression, with other oasis settlements spaced out along the same line to the north and south.
Beyond the groves, the map is almost empty. Only a few long roads cross the sand, which makes the town's outline particularly sharp and clear.

Ko e ha Touggourt
Touggourt is the kind of place that stays with you, whether you were born there, worked in the region or crossed the Sahara. A map of an oasis town has a striking simplicity: streets, palms and open space.
You can personalise the title, the subtitle and the coordinates line, in any language. Five styles are available: Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Sand is the obvious companion to the desert, and Noir makes it look nocturnal.
