Tulancingo lies in a high valley in the state of Hidalgo, northeast of Mexico City, surrounded by low hills and mountains. The city centre follows a grid around its main square and cathedral, while newer neighbourhoods spread across the flat valley floor. The Tulancingo River runs through the area, and roads lead out toward Pachuca and the Sierra.
The city has long been a regional centre of textile and wool production, and the valley is known for dairy and cheese. The archaeological site of Huapalcalco nearby points to settlement in the valley long before the colonial era. Tulancingo is also the seat of a Catholic archdiocese, with its cathedral anchoring the historic centre.
