Tumba is the seat of Botkyrka municipality, south-west of central Stockholm, and its map is shaped by the commuter railway that runs through it. The station area forms a centre of denser blocks, while neighbourhoods of apartment buildings and detached houses spread out on either side in curving streets that follow the rocky, wooded terrain.
Around the edges the built area gives way quickly to forest, small lakes and open fields, a pattern typical of the Stockholm region where glacial ridges and bedrock break up the land. Streets bend around hills rather than cutting through them, and cul-de-sacs and loops give the residential areas a soft, cellular look from above.
