Turbat is the main town of Kech District in the Makran region of southern Balochistan, and one of the larger cities in the province. It lies in the valley of the Kech River, between bare ranges of hills. From above, the town appears as a long band of streets and compounds following the river, surrounded by dense date palm groves.
Dates are central to the local economy, and Makran is known for its many varieties. Nearby, the Mirani Dam on the Dasht River stores water for irrigation. Turbat is also home to Koh-e-Murad, a place of pilgrimage for the Zikri community that draws visitors from across the region.
