Udhampur sits in the foothills of the Himalaya in Jammu and Kashmir, in a valley surrounded by the ridges of the Shivalik range. On a map the town lies on a gently sloping basin. Streets climb the surrounding hills, and the Devika stream, which is regarded as sacred locally, runs through the town.
The town has long been a gateway to the Kashmir Valley. The Jammu–Srinagar national highway passes through it, and Udhampur station is on the railway that now continues north through tunnels and across bridges towards Srinagar.
