Uiju lies in North Pyongan province close to the Yalu river, which forms the border between North Korea and China. For centuries it was the gateway on the main route between Korea and China, the town where diplomatic missions made their crossing, and during the Imjin War of the 1590s King Seonjo withdrew here as invading armies advanced.
On a map the river sets the tone. The Yalu spreads into channels and low islands along this stretch, and flat cultivated land extends from the water toward the hills. The town itself is compact, its streets forming a modest cluster rather than a sprawling plan, surrounded by fields, farm tracks and scattered villages.
A Uiju map poster is an unusual piece: a place most people will never visit, drawn with the same clarity as any capital city. It appeals to those interested in Korean history, border geography and the long story of the Yalu crossing, as well as to families with roots in the northwest of the peninsula.
The border river divides into several channels and low islands near the town, giving part of the map a layered, braided character that contrasts with the fields.
For centuries Uiju stood on the main road between Korea and China, and its position close to the river still defines where the town sits on the map.
The settlement forms a small, concentrated cluster of streets surrounded by open farmland, a clear and simple shape set against generous areas of empty space.

Some maps are about places we know, others about places that shaped a family story from a distance. A drawing of Uiju belongs to the second kind, and it can be a meaningful gift for someone whose parents or grandparents came from this corner of Korea.
