Ko e mape
Urussanga lies in the south of Santa Catarina, between the Atlantic coast and the Serra Geral escarpment. Italian immigrants, mostly from northern Italy, founded it in the late nineteenth century, and that heritage still shapes the town's culture, food and architecture. On a map the centre follows the valley floor, with streets bending to fit the rivers and hills.
The municipality is known for its wines, especially those made from the Goethe grape. The variety has been grown here since the immigrant era and is protected by a geographical indication for the region's valleys. The wider area was also part of southern Santa Catarina's coal-mining district. Small rural communities are scattered through the hills around the town.
An Urussanga map poster shows a town that could never have been laid out on a simple grid. Streets curve along watercourses, climb short slopes and branch into side valleys, and the rural roads beyond wind between hillsides. The result is organic and gently intricate, a fitting portrait of a place whose character comes from its landscape as much as from its people.
The town centre sits on the valley floor. Its main streets follow the course of the river, and bridges carry roads across it.
Vineyards of the Goethe grape, the region's signature variety, cover slopes around the town as part of a wine tradition brought by Italian settlers.
Beyond the centre, roads twist through hills and side valleys toward small farming communities, drawing loose, curving lines across the outer map.
