Valdosta lies in south Georgia, close to the Florida border, and grew in the nineteenth century as a railroad town. On the map, a downtown grid centres on the courthouse, and rail lines cross the city in long, gentle diagonals. Residential streets spread outward in all directions across the flat coastal plain, broken up by parks, creeks and large tree-shaded lots.
Valdosta State University occupies a campus north of downtown known for its Spanish Mission-style buildings, a large area of open space on the map. Further out to the northeast, Moody Air Force Base sits among pine woods, its runways among the most geometric shapes in the region. A Valdosta map poster can frame the city tightly around downtown or widen to show these edges.
The city is known as the Azalea City for the flowering shrubs planted through its neighbourhoods, and it has a long tradition of high school football. West of town, the Withlacoochee River winds through wooded lowlands. Rendered in black and white, the flat grid, rail corridors and curving creeks give a calm, well-proportioned composition.
Several railroad lines run through Valdosta at angles to the grid, long straight strokes that recall how the city was founded along the tracks.
Valdosta State University lies north of downtown, its quads, lawns and athletic fields forming a distinct open area within the residential streets.
The historic centre is laid out around the courthouse in a regular grid, a compact, dense section at the heart of the poster.
