Vatra Dornei lies in the Dorna depression in Suceava County, in the Romanian region of Bukovina, surrounded by the Eastern Carpathians. Water sets the shape of the map. The Dorna River flows into the Bistrița here, and the town spreads along both valleys. Its streets fill the flat basin floor, and wooded mountains rise on every side.
The town has been a spa resort since the nineteenth century, when Bukovina was part of the Austrian Empire, and its mineral springs are still famous. Dorna water is sold throughout Romania. A large spa park with the old casino building sits at the centre, and ski slopes on the nearby mountainside make it a destination in winter too.
