Vellmar is a town in northern Hesse, directly north of Kassel. It was formed in the 1970s when several neighbouring villages merged, and the map still shows that origin. Several older cores with curving village streets are linked by newer residential districts and surrounded by fields and woodland.
From above, the town reads as a series of connected clusters rather than one centre. Main roads run toward Kassel in the south, quiet cul-de-sacs fill the residential areas, and farmland and green strips separate the parts of town. A small stream valley runs through the landscape.
