Vicuña lies in the Elqui Valley in Chile's Coquimbo Region, inland from the coast at La Serena. The valley is a narrow band of green in an arid landscape, and the town sits within it. From above you see a regular colonial-style grid of blocks around a central plaza, with the Elqui River running alongside.
The valley floor is irrigated for vineyards that produce grapes for pisco, and the cultivated strips follow the river between steep, bare mountain slopes. The clear, dry skies have made the area a centre for astronomy and stargazing observatories. Vicuña is also the birthplace of the Nobel Prize-winning poet Gabriela Mistral.
