Vignola lies in the province of Modena, where the Panaro river leaves the Apennine foothills and runs out onto the flat Po plain. The map shows a compact historic centre above the river, with the medieval Rocca at its edge. Newer quarters spread across the level ground beyond it, toward the surrounding farms.
In Italy the town is best known for its cherries, which grow in orchards throughout the surrounding countryside.
