Villena lies in the north of Alicante province, in a broad inland valley at the meeting point of several historic regions. The old town rises on a slope below the Castillo de la Atalaya, and its streets climb and curve around the hillside. Below, the newer town extends onto flat land in a more regular pattern, and main roads and a railway cross the valley.
The town is known for the Treasure of Villena, a Bronze Age gold hoard found nearby and one of the most important archaeological finds of its kind in Spain. The valley floor was once occupied by a lagoon that was later drained. On a map, the surrounding farmland shows long, straight field lines that reflect that reshaped landscape.
