Waal lies in the Somali Region of eastern Ethiopia, in a broad landscape of dry plains and scrubland that covers much of the region. Settlements here are often small and far apart, connected by long roads and tracks. On a map Waal appears as a modest cluster of streets surrounded by open land.
Herding is central to the region's rural life, with camels, goats, sheep and cattle. In places, seasonal watercourses cross the land and stay dry for much of the year. The roads and tracks follow the routes between water, grazing and markets, which gives the map its basic shape.
