Wangen im Allgäu lies in the far south-east of Baden-Württemberg, close to the Bavarian border and not far from Lake Constance. Its core is a compact historic town that grew as an imperial free city. On a map the old town shows as a tight, almost rectangular knot of streets. Newer districts spread around it in looser curves.
Two surviving city gates anchor the historic centre: the Ravensburger Tor and the Lindauer Tor, also known as the Martinstor.
