Ko e mape
Wels lies on the Traun in Upper Austria, on a broad, flat plain between Linz and the Alpine foothills. The river runs along the southern side of the centre, and from above its channel, weirs and wooded banks form a strong line that the city grew beside. North of it, streets spread outward in every direction across open, level ground.
The city has deep roots: as Ovilava it was an important Roman town, and in 1519 Emperor Maximilian I died in the castle here. The historic core still centres on the Stadtplatz, a long square lined with townhouses, and the old town's footprint is easy to pick out on the map as a tight cluster of narrow lanes.
A Wels map poster shows that layering clearly. The medieval centre is small and dense, the nineteenth- and twentieth-century districts around it are more open, and rail lines and major roads converge from all sides. It is a well-balanced composition for anyone who knows the city from its markets, its trade fair or simply daily life by the river.
The Traun passes just south of the old town, a wide band of water with parkland along its banks that anchors the whole composition and separates the centre from the southern districts.
The long main square forms the spine of the old town, a clear open shape among the dense surrounding lanes and one of the first things the eye finds on the map.
Wels is a railway junction, and several lines fan into the station north of the centre, drawing long curves that contrast with the compact historic core.
