Wenshang is a county in Jining, in southwestern Shandong Province, on the flat expanse of the North China Plain. Its name refers to its position above the Wen River. From above, the county seat appears as a grid of wide, straight streets, with newer residential blocks and older neighbourhoods set side by side.
The land around the town is flat and intensively farmed, divided into long rectangular fields crossed by roads, canals and irrigation channels. Villages sit at regular intervals across the plain. The town is also home to an old Buddhist pagoda, one of its best-known historic sites.
