Ko e mape
Wilhelmshaven was founded in 1869 by Prussia as a naval harbour on the western shore of the Jade Bight, and the map still shows that purpose. Large rectangular basins, lock gates and quays cut deep into the city and separate the older centre from the waterfront. The town stands on flat, low-lying marshland protected by dikes, so its coastline is a set of straight engineered edges rather than a natural shore.
It remains the largest base of the German Navy. It is also home to the JadeWeserPort, Germany's only deep-water container terminal, built out into the bay on land raised from the seabed. The Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge swings across the Great Harbour. This early twentieth-century iron swing bridge has become the city's best-known symbol.
A Wilhelmshaven map poster traces the meeting of city and water: the South Beach promenade facing the Jade, the harbour arms reaching inland and the orderly residential streets beyond. In black and white the port geometry becomes almost abstract, a pattern of rectangles and long edges set against the open tidal water of the North Sea coast.
A broad inner basin runs east to west through the city, lined with quays and crossed by bridges. It is the clearest single shape on any map of Wilhelmshaven.
Opened in 1907, this swing bridge spans the Great Harbour and was among the largest of its kind in Europe when completed. On the map it links the centre with the South Beach.
The deep-water container terminal reaches into the Jade on reclaimed land north of the city. Its long, straight quay pushes the coastline well beyond its natural line.
