Williamsport lies along the north bank of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River in north-central Pennsylvania. The river runs across the bottom of the map, lined by levees, and the city's grid extends north from it before the valley gives way to the wooded ridges of the Appalachian country.
In the late nineteenth century, Williamsport was one of the great lumber towns of America, and the timber fortunes built the mansions along West Fourth Street, still known as Millionaires' Row. Today the area is best known internationally for the Little League World Series, played each August across the river in South Williamsport.
A Williamsport map poster shows a classic river-valley city. The broad curve of the Susquehanna, the bridges crossing it, the regular downtown grid and the mountain ridge to the south make for a balanced, readable composition that suits both locals and visitors who came for the baseball.
The river sweeps across the south of the city, with levees along its bank. It's the defining line of the map and the reason the city grew here.
West Fourth Street's corridor of lumber-era mansions runs straight through the western part of the grid, a reminder of the timber boom that built the city.
Several bridges connect Williamsport to South Williamsport across the river, the home of the Little League World Series.
