Willmar is the county seat of Kandiyohi County in west-central Minnesota, a region of prairie dotted with lakes. The city began as a railroad town, and the map still shows it: a regular grid of streets aligned with the tracks, a downtown near the rail line, and residential blocks spreading outward in straight rows.
Water breaks up this grid. Foot Lake and Willmar Lake sit right next to the city, and their rounded outlines interrupt the rectangular blocks, turning some streets into curved lakeshore drives.
