Wolcott is in the hills of western Connecticut, just northeast of Waterbury. There is no single dense centre. The map shows roads following the terrain, curving around ridges and down into small valleys, with residential streets branching off in cul-de-sacs and loops. Patches of woodland and water fill much of the space between neighbourhoods, which gives the town a green, broken-up outline.
The town is known as the birthplace of Amos Bronson Alcott, the educator and transcendentalist and the father of Louisa May Alcott. Wolcott grew as a farming community and later became a residential town linked to the industrial valleys nearby. Its roads still follow older routes over the high ground, so the street pattern reads as organic rather than planned.
