Xilembene, also written Chilembene, lies in Gaza Province in southern Mozambique, in the lower Limpopo valley near Chókwè. The land here is flat and fertile, shaped by the river and by the irrigation systems that serve the region's farms. From above, homesteads and roads sit among a patchwork of cultivated fields.
Xilembene is known as the birthplace of Samora Machel, the first president of independent Mozambique. The wider Chókwè area has long been one of the country's key irrigated farming zones, and canals and field boundaries give the landscape a structured, grid-like texture.
