Xujiang is the county seat of Guangchang in eastern Jiangxi province, close to the border with Fujian. As its name suggests, it grew along the Xu River, part of the upper Fu River system, and on a map the water is the organising line, with the town's streets following its bends.
The surroundings are hilly and green, so the built area stays within the valley and the river corridor rather than spreading freely. Main roads run along and across the river, and residential blocks fill the flatter ground on either side. The hills around it appear as calm, open space in a minimalist drawing.
