Ko e mape
Yichang stretches along the Yangtze at the point where the river emerges from its gorges into flatter country. On the map the city is long and narrow, following the curve of the northern bank, with hills pressing close to the water upstream and the landscape opening out downstream. Bridges connect the main districts to the southern bank, where building continues beneath steep green slopes.
Two great dams define this stretch of the river. The Gezhouba Dam, completed in the 1980s, crosses the Yangtze within the urban area itself, while the Three Gorges Dam, the largest hydroelectric power station in the world by installed capacity, stands upstream at Sandouping. Just above the city, Nanjin Pass marks the eastern end of Xiling Gorge.
A Yichang map poster follows the city's ribbon-like form and the broad body of the river that shapes it. The dam's straight barrier cuts across the water, bridges step from bank to bank and the street grid thins out as it climbs into the hills. It is a map of a place defined almost entirely by its river, and it reads that way.
This dam spans the Yangtze inside the city, a straight line drawn across the full width of the river and one of the most striking features of the map.
At Nanjin Pass, just upstream, the Yangtze leaves Xiling Gorge and widens. The poster shows the river narrowing between hills at one edge and spreading out at the other.
Yichang's districts line up along the northern bank for many kilometres, giving the built-up area a long, curving shape that mirrors the river beside it.

Ko e ha Yichang
Yichang is a map for people from Hubei, for engineers who worked on the dams and for travellers who began or ended a Yangtze cruise here. Its elongated form and strong river make it one of the more distinctive Chinese cities to hang as a graphic print.
Add a title, a subtitle with a year or a name, and adjust the coordinates line as you wish. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Blueprint suits a city so closely tied to engineering.
