Yonezawa lies at the southern end of Yamagata Prefecture, in a broad basin enclosed by mountains. The upper reaches of the Mogami River run along the western side of the city, and irrigation channels thread through the rice fields around it. The streets follow an orderly grid inherited from the castle-town layout, with the former castle site at its heart.
For more than two centuries Yonezawa was the seat of the Uesugi clan. The castle itself is gone, but its moats remain, and the grounds inside them now hold Uesugi Shrine, dedicated to the warlord Uesugi Kenshin. Uesugi Yozan, the domain lord who rescued its finances in the eighteenth century, is still a source of local pride. The city is also known for Yonezawa beef.
A Yonezawa map poster makes the castle moat the anchor of the composition: a clear outline of water in the middle of a regular street pattern. Around it, the grid gradually loosens into farmland and then reaches the edge of the basin. The result is a tidy, balanced map that shows how carefully the town was planned and how much of that plan can still be read today.
The water-filled moats of the former Uesugi castle enclose the shrine grounds at the centre of the city. They form the most recognisable shape on the map.
The streets laid out around the castle still follow a regular pattern. The older samurai and merchant districts leave a clear right-angled imprint across the centre.
Beyond the built-up area, rice fields spread to the foot of the surrounding mountains. The basin gives the map a sense of enclosure, with the city settled neatly on its floor.

Yonezawa suits people who value continuity: those who studied or worked there, visitors drawn by the Uesugi story, and families from the region. The map shows a plan that has survived four centuries of change, which gives it a quiet, grounded presence on a wall.
