Yongzhou lies in the south of Hunan, in hilly country near the borders with Guangxi and Guangdong. Its two central districts sit on rivers. Lingling, the older town, grew along the Xiao River, and Lengshuitan developed downstream along the Xiang. The two rivers meet near the city, and on the map their curving courses decide where the streets can go.
The older quarters of Lingling show a tighter, irregular street pattern hugging the riverbank, while newer districts spread across flatter ground in wider blocks. Bridges connect the banks at intervals, and low wooded hills surround the urban area, so the city forms separate clusters rather than one continuous mass. In black and white the effect is quiet and spacious.
Yongzhou has a long literary association. The Tang dynasty writer Liu Zongyuan spent about ten years in exile here and wrote a celebrated series of short landscape essays about the area, often called the Eight Records of Yongzhou. A Yongzhou map poster pays a similar kind of attention to place, recording the rivers and hills that frame the city.
Two rivers meet near the city, their curving channels dividing the districts and giving the map its main lines of movement.
The historic quarter along the Xiao River has a denser, less regular street pattern than the rest of the city, clearly visible at larger print sizes.
Wooded hills separate the urban clusters from one another. On the poster they appear as open space between compact patches of streets.
