Zhonghe is the urban seat of Xiushan county, in the far southeast of Chongqing municipality near the borders of Hunan and Guizhou. The map shows a town shaped by terrain. Its streets fill a relatively flat basin floor, with forested ridges on several sides. Because level land is scarce, roads follow the contours as often as they follow a grid.
This is mountainous country in the Wuling range, home to Tujia and Miao communities, and the county carries that in its official name. Newer districts have spread across the basin in recent decades, and highways and rail lines now connect a place that was once difficult to reach.
