Ko e mape
Zülpich lies on the flat, fertile Börde between Cologne and the Eifel hills. From above, its historic centre stands out as a compact oval. Much of the medieval town wall survives, along with its gates, and the old streets inside meet near the centre. Newer districts spread out around this core in a looser pattern.
The town is Roman Tolbiacum, a staging post on the road between Trier and Cologne, and it is traditionally linked with the battle of 496 in which the Frankish king Clovis defeated the Alamanni. More recently, former lignite pits nearby were flooded to create lakes. The largest now serves as a water sports and leisure area and was the setting for a state garden show.
A Zülpich map poster brings those layers into one frame: the enclosed old town, the roads leaving through its gates, and the smooth shapes of lakes where mining once was. The contrast between a medieval outline and modern water gives the map its character.
The historic centre is enclosed by the line of the old town wall. Its rounded outline is clearly visible on the map, with gates marking where the main roads enter.
Just outside town, broad, smooth-edged lakes fill former lignite workings. They are the largest open shapes on the poster and balance the dense old centre.
Main routes leave Zülpich in long, fairly straight lines across the plain. They echo the town's origins as a stop on a Roman road network.
