De kaart
Abū al-Kahṣīb Map Poster & Print
Abū al-Kahṣīb lies south-east of Basra, along the western bank of the Shatt al-Arab, the waterway formed where the Tigris and Euphrates join. From above, the town stretches along the river instead of gathering around a single centre. Roads run parallel to the water, and short streets branch off between houses and gardens.
The area has long been known for its date palm groves. Small creeks and irrigation channels leave the Shatt al-Arab and run inland, feeding the orchards and dividing the land into long, narrow plots. On the map, these waterways form a fine comb of lines at right angles to the river. They give the district a texture unlike any inland city.
An Abū al-Kahṣīb map poster is a study of water and cultivation as much as streets. The broad river forms one strong edge, and the creeks, roads and plots follow its direction. Built-up clusters appear along the main routes. In monochrome, the mix of channels and lanes makes a delicate, rhythmic print.

Irrigation creeks
Narrow channels leave the river and run inland at regular intervals. They create a comb-like pattern that divides the land into long strips.
Palm grove plots
Between the creeks, long orchard plots and scattered houses fill the ground. The result is a soft, fine-grained texture across much of the district.
