Aci Castello lies on the Ionian coast of Sicily, just north of Catania, where lava flows from Etna reached the sea. From above, the town follows the shoreline in a long band. The coast road runs close to the water, and residential streets climb the gentle slope inland toward the foothills of the volcano.
The town takes its name from its Norman castle, built on a dark basalt outcrop above the sea. The comune also includes Aci Trezza, whose sea stacks are known as the Faraglioni dei Ciclopi. According to legend, they are the rocks the blinded Cyclops Polyphemus threw at Odysseus.
