Converging roads
A handful of routes meet in the town centre and then fan out into the countryside. On the map they read as a loose star shape with the settlement at its hub.

Andilamena Map Poster & Print
Andilamena sits in the Alaotra-Mangoro region of eastern Madagascar, on the rolling uplands north of the Lake Alaotra basin. From above, the town is a compact knot of lanes. It thins quickly into scattered homesteads, fields and unpaved roads that run across the hills. Few streets are paved, so the linework is light and irregular. It follows the ground more than any plan.
The town is best known outside Madagascar for its link to the gem trade. Around the turn of the millennium, ruby finds in the surrounding district drew miners and dealers to the area. The name still turns up in gemological writing. Beyond that, Andilamena is an agricultural town and a local market centre for a thinly populated part of the island.
A black-and-white rendering suits a place like this. With no dense grid to fill the frame, the Andilamena map poster is about spacing: a few converging roads, a cluster of built-up blocks, and wide stretches of open ground around them. The result is quiet and spare. It reads more like a sketch of a settlement than a diagram of a city.

Open highland ground
Beyond the last houses, the map opens into broad empty space. It shows the rolling upland terrain between the Lake Alaotra basin and the forested escarpments further east.
Irregular town lanes
The core has no formal grid. Its short lanes bend and branch as the ground allows, which gives the centre a hand-drawn, organic texture in fine black line.

Waarom Andilamena
Een kaart met betekenis
For people with family roots in Alaotra-Mangoro, or anyone who has worked or travelled in this part of Madagascar, a map of Andilamena marks a place that rarely appears on printed maps at all. The spare composition also works on a wall as a piece of minimal graphic design.
You can set your own title and subtitle, change the coordinates line, or add a meaningful date. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The warmer Paper and Sand tones suit the earthy character of the landscape.
