Anglesey Map Poster
Anglesey, Ynys Môn in Welsh, lies off the northwest coast of Wales. It is the largest island in Wales and much flatter than the mountains of Snowdonia across the water. From above it is a broad, rounded shape with a highly indented coastline of bays, estuaries and small headlands. The Menai Strait, a narrow tidal channel, separates it from the mainland to the southeast.
Two bridges cross the strait close together. Thomas Telford's Menai Suspension Bridge opened in 1826 and was one of the first major suspension bridges in the world. Robert Stephenson's Britannia Bridge, originally built for the railway, now also carries the A55. Nearby, the village with the famously long name, usually shortened to Llanfairpwll, sits by the strait.
An Anglesey map poster also shows Holy Island off the west coast, joined by a causeway and a road bridge. Holyhead is its main town and the ferry port for Ireland. On the eastern side of the strait, Beaumaris has an unfinished thirteenth-century castle with an almost perfectly symmetrical concentric plan, now part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
