Bad Vilbel sits on the Nidda river where it runs south toward Frankfurt, at the edge of the Wetterau plain. The river curves through the town in soft loops, with meadows and paths along its banks. The historic centre stays close to the water, and newer districts spread across the gentle slopes on either side. Rail lines and main roads run north–south and tie the town to the city next door.
The town owes its 'Bad' to its mineral springs. Spring water has been bottled here for generations, and the local brands are well known in the Rhine-Main region. At the heart of the old town stands a medieval moated castle, the Wasserburg. Every summer it becomes the stage for the Burgfestspiele, a popular open-air theatre festival.
